United Nations, Particularly Relevant for Women

WomenWatch is a joint initiative of the UN Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW). It is the UN Internet Gateway on the advancement and empowerment of women and an evolving forum on global women's issues in the follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995). The WomenWatch Internet site provides up to date information on the UN's work on behalf of the women of the world, the global agenda for improving the status of women and constitutes an electronic space for exchange of information and ideas on women's issues.

UN DAW: The UN Division for the Advancement of Women at http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw
DAW is part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. It advocates the improvement of the status of the women of the world and the achievement of their equality with men. It aims to ensure the participation of women as equal partners with men in all aspects of human endeavour. It promotes women as equal participants and beneficiaries of sustainable development, peace and security, governance and human rights. It strives to stimulate the mainstreaming of a gender perspective both within and outside the United Nations system.

UNIFEM: The United Nations Development Fund for Women at http://www.undp.org/unifem/ promotes women's empowerment and gender equality. It works to ensure the participation of women in all levels of development planning and practice, and acts as a catalyst within the UN system, supporting efforts that link the needs and concerns of women to all critical issues on the national, regional and global agendas. UNIFEM focuses its work at the country level. Playing a strong advocacy role, the Fund concentrates on fostering a multilateral policy dialogue on women's empowerment.

INSTRAW is an autonomous body of the United Nations established in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations with a unique mandate to serve as a vehicle to promote and undertake policy-oriented research and training programmes at the international level to contribute to the advancement of women worldwide. Within this context INSTRAW plays a critical role in efforts to achieve the global agenda of gender equality and sustainable development.

Research and Databases at WHO at http://www.who.int/frh-whd. Part of the work done is to build up knowledge of methodologies used to measure violence against women and its consequences, as well as risk and protective factors which will help to identify interventions. The two main activities are a multi-country study on women's health and violence, and a global database on violence against women and its health consequences.
